Top 10: New Year's Resolutions All Men Should Make

By Steven Shaw Top 10 List

We’ve decided to offer a helping hand toward achieving that triumvirate of aims. These are New Year's resolutions that every man should make -- and that any man can manage. We aren’t suggesting very specific aims; rather, these are designed to make you think about what you really want out of life and you should interpret them in a way that is appropriate to you.

Best Resolutions

10. Build a shelf

We know that not everyone is a skilled handyman, but learning some basic DIY has all sorts of advantages. Firstly, it saves time and money if you can fix something yourself instead of hiring someone to do it for you. It gives you a great sense of accomplishment when you finish a project, and it is also a pretty impressive skill to have.

So this year, make sure you put energy into learning how to do something practical. Whether it is turning a plank of wood into a shelf or rewiring your entire house (which we wouldn’t suggest as a first project), a manual project is certainly a resolution all men should make.

Best Resolutions

9. Read a big book

How many great books have we all heard of, but never actually read -- and perhaps even lied about reading? This year, make a point of knocking at least one title off that list. There are so many classic novels to choose from that you are bound to find something that will appeal to you. Not only will it make you more erudite, as you discover why that novel is held in such high regard (and possibly improve your vocabulary) but it may just kick-start a new enthusiasm for reading.

Best Resolutions

8. Make an appointment for a checkup

It is a frequently repeated statement that men are singularly bad at visiting their doctor. By and large, men prefer to say nothing and hope that a problem goes away rather than be seen as a hypochondriac or a wuss. But we say this year is the time to change that. Make an appointment for that checkup, even if it is just to confirm that everything’s working the way it should be. The importance of your health cannot be overstated; take one small step to help yourself.

Best Resolutions

7. Go to a career conference

There are very few men out there who are entirely satisfied with the position they are in career-wise, and the rest of us don’t necessarily know how to progress. This is where our next resolution comes in. Visiting a career conference will give you all sorts of great advice on career progression. It will help to galvanize you if you have found your motivation flagging, and is a great opportunity for networking. It will dig you out of the rut you find yourself stuck in, and may be just what you need to finally start getting the recognition you deserve at work.

Best Resolutions

6. Devote more time to your hobbies

While our previous point emphasized the importance of working on your career, we also recognize the importance of having good quality downtime as well. It is all too easy to come home after a hard day at the office, sit on the couch and watch TV. Remember when you used to have hobbies? Start devoting time to rediscovering those activities. It is a more fulfilling way to spend your time than doing nothing, and may also allow you to meet some new people. Whether it’s a sport, a musical instrument or some incredibly obscure activity, make time for it again.

Best Resolutions

5. Do P90X

Countless studies have shown that setting vague fitness and weight-loss goals are easily ignored. Much more effective is setting a workout routine to follow, which then lets the weight thing take care of itself. P90X is just one example of these challenging exercise programs that keep you motivated as well as yielding excellent results. Find one that suits your aims (weight loss, muscle gain, etc), and then get going with it. You will find you have more energy, you look and feel better, and those love handles will cease to be a concern.

Best Resolutions

4. Open a savings account

The last 12 months have been a salutary lesson in the importance of sound financial management. While that was on a global scale, we can all do better with our personal finances. As one small step, we recommend opening a savings account. Put a percentage of your salary in each month (or whatever you can spare) and don’t touch it. Pretty soon you won’t miss the money you have put away, and it will gradually grow into the beginnings of a nest egg. You can use this as a springboard into better fiscal health more generally.

Best Resolutions

3. Conquer a fear

We never promised that these would all be a walk in the park (unless you are afraid of parks). Everyone has fears of one kind or another, and overcoming them can be a real battle. The cheapest and most effective way to overcome your fear is to expose yourself to what you’re scared of until you get over it. If your fear is having a negative impact on your quality of life, 2010 is the year to make this resolution.

Best Resolutions

2. Help someone else

A great way to feel better about yourself is by helping those in need. We realize that not everyone has lots of time to devote to this, but whatever you can do to help is worth doing. Whether that is volunteering in a soup kitchen (especially helpful in the winter) or helping your elderly landlady carry out her garbage, make 2010 the year when you start thinking about making the world better for everyone else. It is very easy to become self-absorbed and forget there are always people in need of help. Don’t make that mistake this year.

Best Resolutions

1. Visit a new destination

Our No. 1 resolution for 2010 is about taking yourself outside your comfort zone, broadening your horizons and checking out a new corner of the world. The quickest way to cure listlessness or boredom is to put yourself in the crosshairs of an adventure. Whether you have a dream destination in mind or you simply throw a dart at a map of the world, going somewhere new is the most important New Year’s resolution all men should make. Even if you hate traveling, you can still do this. Visiting somewhere new can even include the restaurant you walk past every day, the local museum or the next town over.

10 Best Christmas Movies

10. 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation' (1989)

Chevy Chase is at the top of his game in this sight-gag-and-one-liner-laden homage to the love/hate event that is the family Christmas. Where, besides this list, is there a place big enough for a movie with Yule laughs this huge? As Clark Griswold would say, "Bend over and I'll show you."

9. 'Babes in Toyland' (1934)

Mother Goose rhymes come to life in this '34 classic (reissued in '52 as 'March of the Wooden Soldiers') starring comedy legends Laurel and Hardy as gut-bustingly bumbling toymakers out to save Toyland from the nefarious Barnaby. And if tricking him into a same-sex wedding is what it takes, so much the better.

8. 'Home Alone' (1990)

It made Macaulay Culkin the biggest child star on the planet, reigned at the box office for 12 straight weeks and grossed $533 million worldwide, but the best thing about this holiday staple is watching an 8-year-old kid toss burglars Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern a good old-fashioned Christmas beat-down.

7. 'Christmas in Connecticut' (1942)

Arnold Schwarzenegger was so enamored with this classic he directed his own TV version in 1992. True story. But for the love of Sinbad, stick to the original, a serene screwball comedy starring Barbara Stanwyck as a food writer who misleads her readers in adorably forgivable ways.

6. 'Elf' (2003)

Frank Ricard. Ron Burgundy. Ricky Bobby. They're all unforgettable Will Ferrell personas, but the role he might be remembered for most in 50 years is Buddy the Elf (what's your favorite color?) from '03's instant holiday classic. This non-stop laugher exemplifies all-ages entertainment.

5. 'White Christmas' (1954)

Aren't we all dreaming of a 'White Christmas'? The movie starring Bing "Mr. Christmas" Crosby and Danny Kaye is as charming as the tune, with all the elements to warm the heart: Two GIs come home from WWII, fall in love with singing-and-dancing sisters and help their general with his failing Vermont inn. Awww.

4. 'Scrooged' (1988)

Only Bill Murray could so expertly walk the fine line between pathos and hilarity, as he does playing miserly TV exec Frank Cross. Complete with a taxi-driving Ghost of Christmas Past and a (literally) ball-busting Ghost of Christmas Present, this Dickens send-up is so offbeat and fun, Yule love it!

3. 'Miracle on 34th Street' (1947)

If this '47 classic doesn't make you a Santa believer, nothing (especially the '94 remake) will. It's dark stuff for a Christmas flick -- Kris Kringle is put on trail to determine if he's legally insane -- but the endgame (in which the US Postal Service saves the day!) is utterly heartwarming.

2. 'It's a Wonderful Life' (1946)

A tale of depression and almost-suicide doesn't exactly scream "Christmas classic" -- which is probably why Frank Capra's flick flopped at the box office. But more than 30 years later, it endures as a beloved testament to everything Christmas embodies: family, friends and the joy of life.

1. 'A Christmas Story' (1983)

There's nary a scene to forget in this near-perfect nostalgic look at where Americana and Christmastime meet. The story of a young boy's epic quest to get his hands on a Red Ryder BB gun provides the hilarious backdrop for a timeless tale rife with family hijinks, frozen tongues and, of course, sex-oozing leg lamps.

Boxing Day Shopping Tips!

If you're like me you stay far, far away from the stores on boxing day. However if you're itching to spend some of your Christmas cash then check out these great tips for a successful and relatively stress free experience!

1. Make a shopping list and go out only for those items. Try not to browse or you'll most likely grab items that you really don't need and don't want. Just because an item is on sale doesn't mean that it's a "must have"!

2. Get an early start! It's not uncommon for shoppers to line up at the store an hour or two before the store opens. While I don't necessarily recommend getting in that early you will probably want to get there very close to when the store opens. Much of the good stuff is taken a few hours after opening, so if you're looking for a "hot" item be prepared to get up with the birdies!

3. Wear comfy shoes and clothes that breathe!! The lines will be long and you may even have to sprint once or twice. Sneakers, UGGs or any kind of flat shoe will keep tootsies relaxed. I know it's cold here in the Great White North but wearing a big, bunchy winter coat will have you sweating the small stuff in no time. Either a vest or medium weight sweater should be warm enough to walk to your car while keeping you snug in the store or mall. Keep it casual and you'll be keeping your cool while others are hot under the collar.

3. Good deals can often be found on electronic goods but beware of bait and switch tactics. This is when merchants draw you in with bright & shiny sales ads but then don't have the advertised goods in stock. Instead, they try to convince you to buy a similar, higher priced item and poof your saving are all gone! If the store is out of the item that you want wait until another good sale comes along.

4. Check the retailer’s website before you go. Many retailers’ websites allow for in-store pickup for items purchased online and almost all offer free shipping. Skip the check-out and shop online if at all possible!

5. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s worth your money. Sometimes it is smarter to pay more for a higher quality item. If you want a specific product check out reviews on Amazon.com or Epinions.com before jumping in head-first. This is an especially good idea for sale items as many are not returnable.

6. Take advantage of price matching! Most large retailers and department stores will match or beat the lowest advertised price. Make sure that you have the current store flyer with the sale price listed and make sure that you're looking at the exact same item (model number, size, description etc.). Stores will only match the price if the item is identical (ask me how I know, lol) so avoid confusion by going over both items thoroughly.

7. If buying something on impulse, be careful, remember chances are you won't be able to return it because it was on sale. If you're buying clothing make sure that you try the item on first. Especially shoes! Do not be taken in by the sales-clerk telling you that the shoes will stretch! I can assure you that if they're not comfortable in the store they won't magically stretch and form to fit your feet when you get them home.

8. Apres-shopping take some time to relax! Grab a coffee, soak in the bath or munch on some yummy holiday left-overs. You did good...now enjoy your new treats and your much deserved time off!

  • While on your Christmas travel, take all the necessary things along with you. These things include all those items that you might need while traveling. First aid kit, tissues, litter bag, clips, water, pen, paper, watch, compass, map, credit cards, phone numbers, cell phone, lip balm, lotion, cream are some of these important things.
  • Small children usually get bored easily so if there are small children with you on the Christmas travel, then keep some games and reading material for them so that they don’t feel bored.
  • If you are planning your Christmas trip on your own vehicle then it becomes imperative that your vehicle is in proper condition. For safe Christmas travel, ensure that your vehicle is fine. Get the service done few days before you have to leave.
  • If you are traveling by air, then pack your stuff in transparent plastic bags, as your luggage will be checked thoroughly.
  • For online booking of tickets for your Christmas travel, always make sure in advance that your seats are booked.
  • Don’t forget to keep the cell charger with you.
  • If you are not taking Christmas travel packages, then book the hotels online before reaching your destination, as you might not get the rooms at that time. It is always to book in advance.
